ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run

ConocoPhillips will host the 26th annual ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run on Saturday, February 23rd, 2013. Participants will enjoy a new course that begins in the heart of downtown Houston and continues along the scenic Allen Parkway as a kick-off for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) Parade.

This tradition, which raises scholarship funds for Texas youth, will once again lead the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) Parade past thousands of cheering spectators in downtown Houston. Since 1988, ConocoPhillips has donated all Rodeo Run entry fees to the HLSR Educational Fund, totaling $3.3 million to date. Through these donations, the Rodeo Run has helped make college dreams a reality for Texas high school students. Last year, a record 15,000 participants took part in the Rodeo Run, generating a record $400,000 for college scholarships.

Runners and walkers of all levels are invited to participate in the 10K race and 5K fun run/walk. Staying true to the Rodeo Run tradition, the family-friendly event will feature a costume contest, entertainment along the course and a Texas-sized post-race party, making the run one of the most popular and memorable events in the region. This year an expected 17,000 runners and walkers will participate in the event.

We invite you to join in the fun!


The Racecourse

This year, participants will enjoy new 10K race and 5K fun run/walk courses that begins in the heart of downtown and continues down the scenic Allen Parkway. Runners and walkers will experience plenty of Texas hoopla along the racecourse as they kick off the HLSR Parade in downtown Houston.

2013 Rodeo Run Racecourse

The ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run 10K is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and the Gulf Association of USA Track & Field. 10K race participants are expected to strictly adhere to USA Track & Field operating regulations. The 5K fun run/walk is unsanctioned, noncompetitive, and fun for the whole family!

Getting the opportunity to play at the awesome Miller Outdoor Theatre!! So many memories have been created at this awesome venue. Who remembers sliding or rolling down that hill as little kids? Who STILL does that?? Haahaa! And soo many great performers have come to the Miller stage since it was built in 1968. We were just lucky enough to be one of them!

And for our #1 moment of 2012…IT HAS TO BE the time we were chosen to perform live on Univision for Noticias 45 and on TeleFutura for Vive La Mañana!! Man that was a long night for us…didn’t sleep, had to be at the TV studio at 3am, sound check at 430. But when the cameras started to roll we turned it on high gear and really kicked some butt! Ahhh good times, good times!

Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Latin American holiday that honors and celebrates the lives of family and friends who have gone before us. Different countries celebrate Dia de los Muertos in their own unique way. The common theme that runs through the two-day celebration, traditionally held November 1 and 2, is the belief that the dead return home, visit loved ones, and feast on their favorite foods. A playful mockery of death and a reaffirmation of life are demonstrated through music, dance, theatre, and visual arts. MECA’s event features Dia de los Muertos celebrations from throughout Latin America, with an altar exhibit competition, foods from the Americas, vendors selling authentic Latin American Dia de los Muertos arts and crafts, and a Calavera Fashion Show. This festival is truly a community cultural event celebrating our ancestors and Latin American traditions. MECA Dia de los Muertos: Honoring Our Past, Celebrating Our Future is held at MECA’s colorful, art-filled campus located at the nationally recognized historic Dow School in Houston’s Old Sixth Ward.

The event will provide a unique opportunity for those unfamiliar with this tradition to learn how countries throughout the Latin American world celebrate this day, which is commonly known in other cultures as All Souls Day.

Our heart goes out to a dear friend, Hanniel Malagon, as his Brother lost his battle to cancer a few days ago. The John H. Reagan High School Marching Band has been chosen by Mayor Parker to perform in the 2012 National Independence Day Parade in Washington D.C.! This is a great honor and a once-in-a-lifetime trip for these kids! But as you can imagine with transportation and housing costs it is VERY expensive to get 90 kids over there. To help raise money, the RHS Music Department is having a Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, March 23rd from 5-8pm in the RHS cafeteria. The Reagan Lockjaw Drumline, Mariachi, & Jazz Band will provide entertainment for the early evening and Los Guerreros de la Musica featuring Vanessa Alonzo will close the night with a special concert!

ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run

The 25th annual ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012. This tradition, which raises scholarship funds for Texas youth, will once again lead the Houston Livestock Show and RodeoTM (HLSR) Parade past thousands of cheering spectators in downtown Houston. Last year, nearly 13,000 participants took part in the 10K and 5K Rodeo Run, raising $360,000 for the HLSR Educational Fund. Since the race began in 1988, the company has raised $2.9 million for the college scholarship fund.
Runners and walkers experience Houston’s only point‐to‐point 10K race and 5K fun run/walk in a festive atmosphere that celebrates the city’s western heritage. A combination of Southern hospitality and generosity, along with a Texas‐sized
post‐race party, makes the run one of the most popular and memorable events in the region. This year an expected 15,000 runners and walkers will participate in the event.

The Rodeo Run is famous for Texas hoopla and a festive atmosphere throughout the entire race course, and this year we’re stepping it up by adding music along the course. This initiative will help draw more runners, walkers & spectators to the event and will help raise a record amount for the HLSR Ed. Fund. We invite you to join in the fun!


Racecourse

The 10K race and 5K fun run/walk racecourses are point-to-point, starting in downtown Houston at the corners of Texas Avenue and Smith Street, and finishing at Minute Maid Park. To ensure everyone’s safety, the 2012 event will kick off with the start of the 10K race followed minutes later by the 5K fun run/walk. Expect plenty of hoopla and large crowds of cheering spectators as participants lead the Houston Livestock Show and RodeoTM parade.

The ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run 10K is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and the Gulf Association of USA Track & Field. 10K race participants are expected to strictly adhere to USA Track & Field operating regulations. The 5K fun run/walk is unsanctioned, noncompetitive, and fun for the whole family!

While the 5K route remains flat along the downtown streets, 10K participants will find a one mile elevated portion of the route as it travels over the Elysian Viaduct north of downtown and a spectacular view of the downtown skyline coming back over the viaduct shortly before the finish at Minute Maid Park.

About Vanessa:

Vanessa Alonzo made her Houston Grand Opera debut in the concert premiere of
“To Cross the Face of the Moon” at the Wortham Theater Center in November 2010. She began her training with the late Alfonso Guerra at Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA). Mrs. Alonzo has been a featured performer with mariachi ensembles throughout Houston since 1998. In 1999, Vanessa was named “Best of Show Vocalist” at Ford-Lincoln Mercury’s Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Vocal Competition. Her notable credits include tours to Ireland, Mexico, Norway and Vietnam. In 2002, Vanessa performed at the Opening Ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Television credits include an appearance on Univision’s, Cristina, as a participant in the Festival de Rancheras and as a finalist on the hit TV show, Tengo Talento Mucho Talento. Mrs. Alonzo is a former student of Tenor and Houston Grand Opera Studio Alumnus, Gabriel Gonzalez.

This is the show you have been waiting for!! That’s right, Los Guerreros de la Musica, Los Pistoleros de Tejas, Megan Jean and BombaChica for only FIVE BUCKS!!!

Coming all the way from Charleston, SC, Megan Jean and the KFB will open up the show with their foot-stompin’, guitar beatin’, upright lickin’, washboard scratchin’, banjo pickin’ madness with a voice like you just ain’t heard before!!

Next, Houston legend, Lupe Olivarez and BombaChica will kick up the volume with their heavy Spanish Rock riffs and smooth, original style. Guaranteed to be a great set! What else can I say?? THESE GUYS KNOW HOW TO JAM!!!

Digging deep into their TEXICAN roots will be Los Pistoleros de Tejas! Los Pistoleros evoke the very essence of Gulf Coast music. With influences of traditional Tex-Mex Conjunto, Norteño, Cumbia, Rock, Cajun, Blues, and Soul, Los Pistoleros are a salsa picante dipped with English and Spanish lyrics. Boundaries are non-existent for Roberto Rodriguez on accordion and the rest of Los Pistoleros!

Then to close the show will be Los Guerreros de la Musica! We will perform songs from our debut album, El Mundo Entero, set to be released August 2011. Who knows?…We may even give y’all a sneak peak to some of the new stuff we’ve been working on! We will also have T-shirts, DVD’s, and buttons for sale!

On March 18, 2011, Tim lost his left leg in a motorcycle accident at Hardy Toll and Beltway 8. In hopes to defray the costs of medical bills, Tim’s friends are organizing a benefit at The Runway set for Sunday, May 1st, 2011. We never imagined such great things would happen for us and we are truly thankful for all the support we’ve received! We played 16 shows this year, won both Battle of the Bands Prelims AND Finals, recorded for our first time, met some really great people, played with some great bands, & found our new trombonist, Oscar Vasquez!! It may seem hard to top that but 2011 is already looking like it’s gonna be even better!! We are gonna start the year off at Duo Tone recording studio and take it from there! Look out for LGM in 2011!!

MECA’s Día de los Muertos Festival features celebrations from throughout Latin America, with an altar exhibit competition, foods from Latin American countries, and vendors selling authentic Latin American Día de los Muertos arts and crafts. This festival truly is a community cultural event celebrating our ancestors and Latin American traditions.

Día de los Muertos Altar Exhibit
The community is invited to participate and create an altar in honor of a past relative or loved one. Family members honor their deceased loved ones with ofrendas or offerings such as photographs, bread, foods, flowers, toys, and other symbolic offerings. Personalize the altar with images of saints, favorite objects, or whatever you think would honor your loved one. Altar exhibit competition contestants could win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
